Cold Pressed Oils

How to Identify Pure Cold Pressed Groundnut Oil

Walk into any shop and you will see dozens of bottles labelled “pure”, “natural” or “cold pressed”. Not all of them are what the label says. If you want real cold pressed groundnut oil (also called wood pressed or marachekku oil), a few simple checks will help you choose better.

What is cold pressed groundnut oil?

Cold pressed groundnut oil is made by crushing groundnuts slowly in a wooden or slow-rotating press, without high heat or chemical solvents. The oil is then filtered and bottled. Because the process is gentle, the oil keeps the natural aroma and flavour of roasted groundnuts.

At Vaniyaa Oil Mills, we have pressed oils the traditional way for 50 years. You can see our cold pressed groundnut oil in the shop.

How it differs from refined oil

Cold / wood pressed oil Refined oil
Process Slow pressing, low heat High heat, chemicals, bleaching
Colour Golden to amber, slightly cloudy Very clear and pale
Aroma Strong, nutty groundnut smell Almost no smell
Taste Rich, natural flavour Neutral

Simple checks before you buy

1. Smell it. Real groundnut oil smells distinctly of groundnuts. If it has almost no smell, it may be refined or blended.

2. Look at the colour. Pure pressed oil is usually golden and not perfectly clear. A very pale, crystal-clear oil is often refined.

3. Read the label. Look for the words “cold pressed” or “wood pressed”, the manufacturer’s name and address, the FSSAI licence number and the batch or packing date. Be careful with vague labels like “natural” or “pure” with no process mentioned.

4. Compare the price. Pressing groundnuts slowly gives less oil than industrial refining, so genuine wood pressed oil costs more than refined oil. A price far below the market rate is a warning sign.

5. Check the packaging. Good oil comes in sealed, clean bottles or tins with a tamper seal and a clear label.

6. Look for sediment. A little natural settling at the bottom of the bottle is normal in pressed oil. It does not mean the oil is bad.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Is this pressed in a wooden or slow-rotating press?
  • Where is it made, and when was it packed?
  • Is it a single-origin oil, or blended with other oils?
  • Can I see the FSSAI licence?

A trustworthy seller will answer these easily. If you buy from a manufacturer with its own oil mill, you can usually visit and see how the oil is made.

How to store groundnut oil at home

  • Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and the stove.
  • Close the lid tightly after each use.
  • Use a clean, dry spoon or ladle.
  • Use it within the time stated on the label.

Frequently asked questions

Is cold pressed groundnut oil the same as wood pressed oil?
Both terms describe oil pressed slowly at low heat. “Wood pressed” refers to the traditional wooden press, called marachekku in Tamil.

Why is cold pressed oil more expensive than refined oil?
The slow pressing process gives less oil from the same quantity of groundnuts, and it needs more time and care.

Why is there sediment at the bottom of my bottle?
Pressed oil is not heavily processed, so tiny natural particles can settle over time. This is normal.

Which oil is best for everyday cooking?
It depends on your cooking style. Groundnut oil is widely used in South Indian cooking for frying and sautéing. You can also try our gingelly oil for tempering and traditional dishes.
